Abstract

The rapid development of urban areas in Indonesia has caused various transportation problems, such as traffic congestion, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and an imbalance between infrastructure capacity and motor vehicle growth. Palembang City as one of the metropolitan cities in South Sumatra faces challenges, especially in increasing the efficiency of urban mobility. To overcome this problem, the government has developed a rail-based mass transportation system, namely the Light Rail Transit (LRT). This research is a descriptive quantitative study, which aims to analyze the occupancy rate of the Palembang LRT at Ampera Station and the factors that influence it. A quantitative approach is used because this study will collect, process, and analyze numerical data related to the occupancy rate, which is calculated based on the number of passengers and LRT capacity using the Loading Factor method. This study uses descriptive statistical analysis to understand the occupancy pattern and operational conditions of the LRT. Transportation policies also have a major impact on the occupancy rate of the LRT. Currently, the Palembang City government has attempted to develop rail-based public transportation as part of a strategy to reduce congestion and air pollution. However, there is still no significant policy on private vehicle restrictions, so that people still have high freedom to use private vehicles without significant obstacles. To increase the occupancy of the Palembang LRT, it is recommended to expand the feeder line and implement an integrated ticket system, extend operating hours and adjust the headway. In addition, it is important to provide more spacious parking and free WiFi at stations and trains, as well as implement congestion taxes and provide incentives for public transportation users.
